the bitter almond hedge

outdoor video installation

in 1652, dutch pioneer jan van riebeeck stepped ashore at the cape of good hope, the southernmost tip of africa. on behalf of the dutch east india company his first object was to establish a victualling station for the dutch spice ships on their lengthy voyages between europe and india. gardens were created, cattle bred and slaves imported to do the hard work. in 1660 van riebeeck planted an impenetrably dense hedge several kilometres in length from bitter almond and hawthorn, to protect the colony against the "heathens and wild animals of africa." the last traces of this hedge still exist today at kirstenbosch, the botanical garden of cape town.
